A geological formation that looks hand-carved but is completely natural: hexagonal basalt columns formed by the slow cooling of volcanic lava. Just 1.5 km from the historic center of Suchitoto. "Los Tercios isn't spectacular because of the waterfall itself — although in winter it really is. What's impressive is the rock formation: thousands of perfect hexagonal basalt columns. Nature made it look like a human construction."
How do I get to Cascada Los Tercios?
15-minute walk from Suchitoto's central park, or tuk-tuk ride ($1). It's the easiest natural attraction to combine with a Suchitoto visit.
When is the waterfall at its most impressive?
During the rainy season (May–October) when water flow is highest. In summer the rock formation is still impressive but the waterfall is reduced.
