The cultural capital of the Tz'utujil people, on the shores of Atitlán. Here they venerate Maximón, a syncretic Maya-Catholic deity whose altar moves to a different house each year — just ask, and someone will take you. The women wear traditional dress with a red ribbon headpiece, and the Atitlán and Tolimán volcanoes close off the landscape. 35 minutes by boat from Panajachel.
