The capital of the Kaqchikel kingdom, founded in 1470 among pine forests at 2,230 meters — the only large archaeological site in the highlands. It was the first to ally with the Spanish and the first to resist their conquest (1524). What makes it unique: Maya priests still hold ceremonies with fire and copal among its ruins.
