1,200 sika deer roaming free across an enormous park, regarded as sacred messengers — and famous for bowing their heads to beg for crackers. You feed them shika senbei by hand while visiting Tōdai-ji and Kasuga Shrine, with its 3,000 lanterns. Charming all year, magical in autumn among the red leaves.
💡 Getting there: JR Nara or Kintetsu Nara (~45 min from Osaka/Kyoto), then a 5-min walk. 🕐 24/7. 💴 Free. 🦌 ~1,200 sika deer protected as a "natural national treasure" — shika senbei crackers: ¥200 (don't feed them anything but the official crackers). 🛕 Inside the park: Tōdai-ji, Kasuga-taisha (shrine of 3,000 lanterns), Kōfuku-ji. Best in autumn for the red leaves.
