The most authentic and laid-back beach in La Libertad. Quieter than El Tunco, with a world-class point break and caves on the west side you can reach at low tide.
"El Zonte is what El Tunco was 10 years ago — more community, fewer weekend tourists. People who come here end up staying."
World-famous for the Bitcoin Beach experiment (2019): the world's first circular Bitcoin economy. Today more than half the businesses accept the Lightning Network. The Wave House (2026) is the new premium oceanfront hotel.
How do I get to El Zonte — Bitcoin Beach?
Bus 192 from Terminal Occidente to Chiltiupán, then a taxi (~$3) to El Zonte. By car it's 50 km from San Salvador, about 60 min.
Can I pay with Bitcoin in El Zonte?
Yes. More than half the businesses accept the Lightning Network. Look for the Bitcoin Beach sign or the Strike app. Not every business accepts it — cash always works as backup.
What surf level do I need for El Zonte?
Intermediate to advanced. The right-hand point break is consistent year-round but can get technical. For beginners, El Tunco (15 min) has better conditions.
When should I visit the El Zonte caves?
The hikes to the caves on the west side of the beach only happen at low tide. Ask at your hostel for the exact time — it changes every day.
